Why Big-Name Movers Stopped Caring About Your Home Move

An industry secret most people don't know, and what to look for instead.

If you're moving your home, the famous-name moving companies you've heard of are probably the worst place to start. This isn't a complaint from someone with a grudge. It's how the industry actually works right now, and most people don't know it.

The Quiet Shift

Big moving brands grew up on residential moves. That's the origin story. But somewhere along the way, the companies that matured into brands also matured into publicly-traded or private-equity-owned operations. Those owners read balance sheets. And when they read the balance sheets, they noticed something.

Why Commercial Is the Easy Money

Two reasons:

  • Scale and margin.A corporate office relocation is one contract, one point of contact, often six figures. A residential move is one contract too, but it's a few thousand dollars of revenue across dozens of separate decisions and hours of hand-holding. Per hour of sales effort, commercial wins by an order of magnitude.
  • Way lower emotional stakes. This is the part nobody says out loud. Nobody calls to complain that their employer's desk got a small scratch on the side. That desk belongs to Accounting, not Mike from Accounting. If a box of office supplies goes sideways, there's a claims form and life moves on.

Now compare that to residential. Residential moves are about people's lives. Grandma's china. The dresser your partner grew up with. Kid's art from preschool. Every item has a story and every ding is personal. One screw-up generates a 2-star review with 400 words of anger.

What This Means for Your Home Move

At the big-name companies, residential moves still get done. But they get done:

  • By the B-team. The best crews are on the corporate contracts where the money is.
  • By subcontractors. Many big brands sell the job and hand it off to whoever has capacity that week. You booked XYZ Moving, but on move day it's a crew from a company you never talked to.
  • By franchise agents you've never heard of. "Van lines" like United, Mayflower, Allied, and North American are actually cooperatives of independently-owned local agents. The quality of your move depends entirely on which local agent the brand assigns you to. You don't pick. They do.
  • With claims processes built for volume, not care. If something breaks, you're filing a form with an insurance adjuster in a call center, not talking to someone who knows your name.

What To Look For Instead

But the Big Names Have Insurance / Coverage / Reputation, Right?

Yes, and no. Every licensed mover has insurance and basic valuation coverage — that's federal law, not a brand feature. The "reputation" of a big name only helps you to the extent that the specific crew assigned to your move cares about it. And they've been quietly told which side of the business pays the bills.

Reputation works the other way with a good local company. They can't afford a bad move. A single enraged Google review on a local mover with 80 reviews does real damage. On a national franchise with 15,000 reviews, it's a rounding error.

When Big-Name Movers Actually Make Sense

We're not saying they're useless. There are two scenarios where they still make the most sense:

  • Commercial and office relocations.Their sweet spot. You'll get their best crews.
  • Out of the state corporate relocations where your employer is paying. The HR departments have contracts with the big brands already, and you're insulated from the billing weirdness because you're not the one paying.
