What movers in Annapolis need to know

Rowhouses, historic districts, narrow streets, and city permits. Here are the four things our crews handle on every Annapolis job.

Historic District 18th-century street widths

Main Street, Maryland Avenue, Prince George Street, and the State Circle / Church Circle blocks are genuinely 18th-century narrow. We dispatch 16- to 20-foot trucks for these zones rather than 26-footers, and we stage the truck closer in when a side street can't take it.

Right-of-way permits with City Public Works

Annapolis requires a Temporary Street-Sidewalk Obstruction Permit any time a moving truck blocks part of a street, alley, or sidewalk. We file with City Public Works ahead of move day.

Eastport waterfront and tight driveway access

Eastport, Murray Hill, and waterfront Hillsmere properties sometimes have tight driveways with saltwater-soft wood decks and narrow boatyard alleys. We confirm truck weight and access before move day and bring boards for any deck transit.

USNA Commissioning Week and sailing-show traffic

Late May (USNA Commissioning Week with the Blue Angels), the U.S. Sailboat Show in early October, and the U.S. Powerboat Show in mid-October each pull tens of thousands of visitors and effectively close downtown for the day. We schedule around these dates or work the early-morning window before traffic builds.

How does a Annapolis move with us actually go?

Five steps from the first call to the follow-up. No mystery, no scope-creep.

  1. Step 1

    Free Quote Walkthrough

By phone, video, or in-person. We measure stairs, hallways, and access. You get a binding price, not an estimate that creeps.

  2. Step 2

    Confirmation & Permits

We lock the date, pull the street permit, book the loading dock if needed, and send your building's certificate of insurance.

  3. Step 3

    Pre-Move Prep

Packing tips, supplies dropped off if you ordered them, and a day-before check-in so you know exactly what to expect on move day.

  4. Step 4

    Move Day

Same crew start to finish. Clean blankets, straps, dollies. Updates as we go. We don't disappear for two-hour lunches.

  5. Step 5

    Wrap-Up

Furniture placed where you want it, walk-through with the lead, and a follow-up call within 48 hours to make sure everything held up.

A Annapolismove we're proud of

Historic District (Maryland Avenue): Three-story 18th-century brick rowhouse with original 30-inch front door and slate-roof dormers

The Challenge

Original 30-inch front doorway, 28-inch interior staircase with two 90-degree turns, no driveway, no rear alley. Sidewalk and street had to stay clear for tour groups walking the State House route. Family had a four-poster bed, an antique secretary, and a grand piano to bring out without scratching original woodwork or the slate stoop.

How we handled it

Filed the Annapolis right-of-way obstruction permit a week ahead so the truck had a 60-foot reserved curb stretch. Dispatched a 20-foot truck. Disassembled the four-poster at the joinery. Hoisted the secretary and the piano through the second-floor side window with a tilt cart and a four-person line. Wall-protected the staircase and used floor runners over the original heart-pine floors. Eight-hour move, no damage.

What permits do you need to move in Annapolis?

Most rowhouse moves need a city right-of-way permit, plus loading-window and historic-district rules to plan around. We handle all of it. Here's what's involved.

  • Annapolis Temporary Street-Sidewalk Obstruction Permit: required when the truck blocks any portion of a street, alley, or sidewalk. We file with City Public Works for every Historic District booking.
  • Historic District truck-size norms: 16- to 20-foot trucks recommended on Main Street, Maryland Avenue, Prince George Street, and the State Circle / Church Circle blocks.
  • USNA-adjacent moves: blocks immediately around the Naval Academy gates have heightened parking enforcement, especially during Commissioning Week and parade days.
  • Waterfront moves (Eastport, Murray Hill, Hillsmere): saltwater-soft wood decks need boards for transit. We bring decking when the route requires it.

When's the best time of year to move in Annapolis?

Spring and fall, with summer the busiest and winter the quietest. Here's what we adjust through the year so weather, traffic, and local quirks don't bite you on move day.

Winter

December through February. Mild by Maryland standards thanks to the Bay, with annual snowfall usually 10-15 inches. Nor'easter surprises do happen and we reschedule rather than risk a slick brick stoop on Maryland Avenue.

Spring

March through May. Best moving weather of the year. Late May is USNA Commissioning Week with the Blue Angels overhead, which closes downtown for several days. We schedule around it or take the early-morning window.

Summer

June through August. Hot, humid, and busy. Tourist downtown traffic and harbor events make Saturdays nearly impossible in the Historic District. We dispatch midweek when we can.

Fall

September through November. The two big in-water shows (Sailboat in early October, Powerboat in mid-October) effectively close downtown. We schedule around them. Hurricane-related flooding in low-lying Eastport and the City Dock is a real consideration in early September.

Which Annapolis neighborhoods do we serve?

All of them. What changes from block to block is truck size, parking, and access. Here's the crew-relevant detail for each.

Historic District / Downtown

18th-century street widths. 16-20 ft truck max. Right-of-way permit required.

Eastport

Waterfront peninsula. Drawbridge access only. Tight driveways and boatyard alleys; check truck weight before move day.

Murray Hill

Quiet historic neighborhood between downtown and Eastport. Mix of older homes; some require permits, most don't.

West Annapolis

Established single-family neighborhood west of the historic core. Driveway parking, easier access.

Admiral Heights

Mid-century single-family. Standard driveway moves.

Parole

Westgate retail corridor with newer condos and townhomes. Standard truck access.

Hillsmere

Waterfront south of city. Saltwater-soft decks; bring decking boards.

Bay Ridge

Older waterfront enclave. Tight private drives. Confirm truck size before move day.

Wardour

Established waterfront west of the historic district. Mature trees and tight private drives.

Annapolis moving FAQ

Straight answers to the questions we hear most from Annapolis customers.

Do I need a permit to move in Annapolis?

+

Yes for any move where the truck blocks a street, alley, or sidewalk. Annapolis requires a Temporary Street-Sidewalk Obstruction Permit through City Public Works. We file the paperwork ahead of move day for every Historic District and downtown booking, post the no-parking signs 48 hours ahead, and the permit fee is included in your binding quote with no markup. Without a permit on a tight Historic District block, the truck circles for a non-permitted space and you pay us to walk an extra hundred feet on every load. Newer suburban Annapolis subdivisions outside the city limits typically don't need a city permit.

Can your trucks fit in the Historic District?

+

Yes, with the right size. We dispatch 16- to 20-foot trucks for Main Street, Maryland Avenue, Prince George Street, and the State Circle / Church Circle blocks rather than 26-footers. The 18th-century street widths and historic-district overlay restrict truck size on most residential blocks. For full-home moves where a 16-footer would mean three trips, we shuttle on a smaller truck and transfer at a staging lot in West Annapolis or Eastport before the long-haul drive. We also know which Historic District blocks have alley access we can use as an alternative loading point.

How do you handle tight Historic District staircases and original doorways?

+

We measure your largest furniture during the quote walkthrough: bed frames, dressers, sectional couches, pianos, and king-size mattresses. If a piece won't fit a 28-inch staircase or a 30-inch original doorway, we hoist it through a second-floor side window with a tilt cart, four-strap rig, and a four-person crew. It's standard practice in Annapolis rowhouses built before 1850, and we've done it many times in the streets around State Circle and Church Circle. The hoist fee is built into your binding quote, not added on move day. We bring banister and wall protectors to keep the original woodwork intact.

When's the best time to move in Annapolis?

+

Spring (March through May, except Commissioning Week in late May when USNA graduation closes downtown) and fall (September through November, except the U.S. Sailboat and Powerboat shows the second and third weekends of October when downtown is unmovable). Summer Saturdays are tourist-heavy and Historic District traffic is rough; we dispatch midweek or early-morning weekday slots when we can. The Bay Bridge weekend traffic in summer can add 30-60 minutes to inbound drives from Eastern Shore destinations. Winter is the cheapest, lowest-demand season; we add buffer time on snow days but most Annapolis winters are manageable.

Do you serve neighborhoods outside Annapolis?

+

Yes. We move clients across all of Anne Arundel County (Crofton, Severna Park, Pasadena, Glen Burnie, Edgewater, Davidsonville, Crownsville), plus into Howard County (Columbia, Ellicott City), Prince George's County, and Calvert County. Our HQ is in Gaithersburg, which makes Annapolis a 75-minute drive for our crews via US-50. We cover all these jurisdictions for moves within 50 miles of HQ. We also regularly handle Annapolis residents moving into D.C., Northern Virginia, Bethesda, Silver Spring, and the Eastern Shore (Easton, St. Michaels, Cambridge) for out of the state and longer-distance jobs.

How much does an Annapolis move typically cost?

+

Local single-family moves usually run $1,500 to $4,500 depending on size, stairs, and access. Historic District rowhouse moves run $1,800 to $4,000 since the right-of-way permit, smaller truck, and older stairs add labor. Long-distance moves are quoted by inventory and distance. Every quote is upfront and binding. No hourly creep.

Does Blue Crab Moving handle packing and unpacking for Annapolis moves?

+

Yes. We offer full and partial packing, with materials sized for typical Annapolis homes: dish packs for inherited china common in older Historic District homes, custom-fit boxes for art and antiques, picture cartons for framed art, wardrobe boxes for walk-in closets, and labeled storage for USNA-related and federal moves with sensitive paperwork. Most Annapolis packing jobs happen the day before move day; full estate packs (4-plus bedrooms with antique inventory typical of Historic District homes) sometimes split across two days. We bring extra padding for marble countertops common in newer downtown condos. The packing service can be booked separately or combined into a single binding quote.
