Move day is the day where every small thing you forgot to pack becomes a big thing. The fix is a single bag or bin you keep with you at all times, not on the truck, not in a box labeled "kitchen." This is the list that goes in it.
The 13-Item Grab Bag
Clear plastic bin is best. Label it. Keep it near you. Don't let it go on the truck.
- Wallet. ID, a card, some cash. If nothing else makes it into the bag, this does.
- Phone charger. Wall charger plus a portable battery bank. Nothing worse than a dead phone mid-move.
- Bluetooth speaker. Music kills stress and moves the day faster. Non-negotiable.
- Water bottles. Hydrate. You'll be carrying boxes or directing traffic all day.
- Snacks. Granola bars, fruit, nuts, trail mix. Something you'll actually eat, not just pack.
- Cleaning supplies. Clorox wipes at minimum. Sponge and dish soap if you want to go further.
- Trash bags. Contractor-grade black bags. You'll fill one by lunchtime.
- Paper towels. For spills, wipe-downs, and the thing you didn't plan for.
- Toilet paper. Unless you confirmed there's a roll waiting at the new place, bring some.
- Tape measure + pen + paper. For when you're wondering if the dresser fits, and you need to write a note.
- Box cutter or scissors. You will use these constantly. Tape always wins without them.
- Essential medications. In your bag, not in a box. Prescriptions, inhalers, EpiPens, all of it.
- Coffee kit. Coffee maker, filters, ground coffee, a mug. Tomorrow morning arrives faster than you think.
When the Truck Arrives
Be there and be available. The crew needs to walk the layout before anything comes off the truck. Know which room is which, and ideally tag them with sticky notes on the door. "Primary bedroom," "Jack's room," "office," etc. It's the difference between stuff landing where it belongs and stuff landing in a pile.
Don't help with the furniture. The crew has done this thousands of times. They have the technique, the straps, and the muscle memory for tight doorways. Your helping usually slows things down or causes injury. If you can't sit still, start on boxes instead.
Unpack the grab bag first. All those essentials are useless if they're sealed in a bin you can't find. First thing off the truck (or out of your car), open it up.
Where to Start Unpacking
Quick version. For the full playbook on why you shouldn't unpack everything and what to do with the box mountain, read Unpack Less, Feel Settled Faster.
- Bathroom first. Sounds weird, makes sense. You want your toiletries and meds on hand, and a hot shower to end the day.
- Bedrooms second.Make the beds before you're tired. Once the mattresses are in place, find the sheets and comforters and get them on. Future-you at 10 pm will thank you.
- Kitchen last. Too many small items. Too many decisions. Save your energy, pick it up the next morning.
