The best move day with a small human is one where they're somewhere else for most of it. Here's how to pull that off, and what to do if you can't.
Call In Reinforcements
If you have the option, get your kid out of the house for the loading part of the day:
- Grandparents or close family. Low-drama, usually thrilled to be asked.
- A playdate at a friend's house. Theirs, not yours. You need the space to work.
- A babysitter for the day. Worth every penny on move day specifically.
If They're With You, Give Them a Real Job
Tell them the hallway and path to the front door are the movers' runway, and they're in charge of keeping it clear. Suddenly they feel in control, and the move literally can't happen without them.
If they need a safe zone, their room (packed last, remember?) is where they want to be. Familiar, quiet, theirs.
Food Planning
The fridge is empty and defrosted by move day. Don't try to cook. Go for minimum-prep food: sandwiches, cereal, yogurt, fruit, snacks, and pizza for dinner. It's a survival day, not a balanced-meals day.
