Surviving Move Day With Kids

Reinforcements, a real job, and how to feed everyone.

The best move day with a small human is one where they're somewhere else for most of it. Here's how to pull that off, and what to do if you can't.

Call In Reinforcements

If you have the option, get your kid out of the house for the loading part of the day:

  • Grandparents or close family. Low-drama, usually thrilled to be asked.
  • A playdate at a friend's house. Theirs, not yours. You need the space to work.
  • A babysitter for the day. Worth every penny on move day specifically.

If They're With You, Give Them a Real Job

Tell them the hallway and path to the front door are the movers' runway, and they're in charge of keeping it clear. Suddenly they feel in control, and the move literally can't happen without them.

If they need a safe zone, their room (packed last, remember?) is where they want to be. Familiar, quiet, theirs. The AACAP's Facts for Families sheet on children and family moves flags the same instinct: kids do better with a clear role and a familiar space than with vague reassurance.

How Do You Feed Everyone on Move Day?

The fridge is empty and defrosted by move day. Don't try to cook. Go for minimum-prep food: sandwiches, cereal, yogurt, fruit, snacks, and pizza for dinner. It's a survival day, not a balanced-meals day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most.

The smoothest move day is one where your kid is somewhere else for the loading. Line up grandparents or close family, a playdate at a friend's house (theirs, not yours, so you have room to work), or a babysitter for the day. If none of that is possible, keep them with you but give them a real job so they feel in control instead of underfoot.
