What's different about out of the state moves

Federal jurisdiction (USDOT and FMCSA)

Interstate moves are regulated by the federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. We hold active USDOT 4539918 and MC 1801440 authority and follow the federal rules on inventory documents, weight tickets, valuation coverage, and pickup-and-delivery windows. The paperwork is real, and we handle all of it.

Two service tiers: dedicated vs shared truck

Dedicated truck means your shipment is the only one on board. Faster delivery, more control, higher cost. Shared (consolidated) truck means we combine your shipment with others heading the same direction. Cheaper, slightly longer delivery window. We quote both so you can pick.

Weight, volume, and distance pricing

Out of the state moves are priced on inventory weight (or volume) and miles, not hourly. We do an in-person or video walkthrough before quoting, so the binding price reflects what's actually moving. No 'we'll figure it out at delivery' surprises.

Storage in transit (SIT) when you need it

Closing dates don't always line up. We offer storage in transit for up to 90 days at our Maryland facility, with one-time loading and one-time delivery on the back end. No double-handling, no second crew at destination unloading from a separate warehouse.

How a out of the state move with us actually goes

  1. Step 1

In-Person or Video Walkthrough at Your DMV Address

We come to your home in Bethesda, Arlington, Federal Hill, Old Town, or wherever you are in the DMV (or jump on video if you prefer). We measure stairs, gauge truck access on your block, log specialty items, and confirm packing needs. The same crew lead who walks the property leads loading day.

  2. Step 2

Binding Quote, COI, and Origin Permits

You get a written, binding quote within 24 hours, with dedicated and shared truck options priced separately so you can compare. If your origin building (a Bethesda high-rise, a downtown D.C. condo, an Arlington tower) needs a Certificate of Insurance, we issue it before move day. We pull the Baltimore BCDOT, D.C. DDOT, or Alexandria street permit if your front door needs one.

  3. Step 3

    Packing, Crating, and Pre-Move Prep

Optional full or partial packing. We bring pro-grade dish packs, wardrobe boxes, picture cartons, and custom crating for art, mirrors, and stone tops. We do a day-before check-in to confirm freight elevator times for high-rises and loading-dock reservations for HOA condos in Rockville, Bethesda, and Arlington.

  4. Step 4

    Loading Day in the DMV

Same crew that did your walkthrough. We time the load to clear I-495 and I-270 rush-hour windows, run a 26-foot shuttle truck if your block (Old Town Alexandria cobblestones, Capitol Hill rowhouse streets, Federal Hill narrow lanes) cannot fit a 53-foot trailer, weigh empty and full at certified scales, and sign the Bill of Lading and inventory list before we pull away.

  5. Step 5

    Transit, Tracking, and Mountain-Pass Routing

We share a delivery window before transit starts and drivers check in en route. East Coast destinations typically deliver in 1-3 days, Midwest 3-5, West Coast 7-10. In winter we plan around I-70 and I-81 mountain-pass weather; in summer we route to keep wood furniture and electronics out of the worst Mid-Atlantic humidity.

  6. Step 6

    Delivery, Destination Permits, and Walk-Through

We coordinate any required permit or COI at the destination (downtown high-rise dock window, HOA loading time, historic-district rules), unload, place furniture per your direction, and walk the inventory list with you. Damage claims (rare) get resolved against your valuation coverage with photos and the signed BOL.

What does an out of the state move cost?

Out of the state pricing is weight (or volume) plus miles, not hourly. The ranges below are typical 2026 prices for moves originating in the DMV. Every quote is binding before move day.

Starting at

$1,199

*

Long-distance moves: starting price for shipments up to 2,000 lbs to East Coast destinations.

* Eligibility and conditions

  • Off-season rate. Peak season (May 1 to September 30) and end-of-month dates run higher.
  • Available on shared-truck (consolidated) routing. Dedicated truck pricing is higher.
  • Applies to East Coast destinations within roughly 500 miles of the DMV.
  • Subject to crew, truck, and consolidation-route availability on the date you request.
  • Packing services, custom crating, stairs, long carries, and specialty items are billed separately.
  • Final binding price is set after an in-person or video walkthrough and supersedes any starting-at quote.

Studio / 1-bedroom apartment

$2,500 – $5,000

Roughly 3,000-5,000 lbs. Typical East Coast destinations (NY, MA, NC, SC). Add 15-25% for Midwest, 35-50% for West Coast.

2-bedroom home or apartment

$4,000 – $8,500

Roughly 5,000-8,000 lbs. Includes typical packing for fragile items. Stairs, walk-ups, and long-carry distances add to the load time.

3-bedroom home

$6,500 – $13,000

Roughly 8,000-12,000 lbs. Most common DMV move size. Add packing services for $1,500-$3,500 depending on inventory.

4-bedroom+ home

$10,000 – $20,000+

Larger inventories with specialty items (pianos, art, antiques, full home offices). Custom crating quoted separately.

What affects your final price

  • Distance: every additional 500 miles roughly adds 10-15% to the base.
  • Service tier: shared truck saves 15-30% vs dedicated truck on most routes.
  • Peak season (May-September) and end-of-month dates run 10-20% higher.
  • Stairs, long carries, and walk-up apartments add labor time at both ends.
  • Specialty items (pianos, gun safes, fine art, antiques) are quoted separately and may require custom crating.
  • Storage in transit runs $0.50-$1.00 per cubic foot per month.

DMV pickup permits and building rules

Long-distance moves live or die on origin-side details. Permits, COI requirements, and historic-district rules vary across the DMV — here is what we handle on every pickup before we head out of state.

Baltimore: BCDOT moving-truck permit

Most Federal Hill, Fells Point, Mount Vernon, and Hampden rowhouse pickups need a Baltimore Department of Transportation right-of-way permit so we can hold curbside space the morning of the move. We file the application, pay the fee, and post the no-park signs 48 hours ahead. Without the permit, we are competing for street space on a long-haul truck, which costs hours.

Washington, D.C.: DDOT permits and historic districts

D.C. row pickups (Capitol Hill, Georgetown, Dupont, Logan Circle, Shaw) need a DDOT public space permit for any truck holding curbside space. Georgetown and Capitol Hill historic-district rules also restrict load times for some blocks. We pull the permit, post signs, and time the load around restricted-hour windows so we depart on schedule.

Bethesda, Rockville, and Silver Spring: HOA dock and freight elevator reservations

Most Bethesda, Rockville, and Silver Spring high-rises and condos require a freight elevator and loading dock reservation, plus a Certificate of Insurance naming the building, management company, and any required additional insureds. We handle the COI paperwork before move day and book the dock window so we are not parked at street level fighting Beltway traffic.

Arlington and Alexandria: COI, parking permits, and Old Town access

Arlington high-rises (Rosslyn, Crystal City, Pentagon City) need a building COI and dock reservation. Old Town Alexandria has parking permit requirements on residential streets and historic-district size restrictions on King Street and the side blocks. When the long-haul trailer cannot reach your front door, we shuttle on a 26-foot truck and transfer at a staging lot.

Annapolis, Frederick, and Howard County: cul-de-sac and HOA access

Suburban Maryland pickups in Annapolis, Frederick, Columbia, and Ellicott City rarely need city permits but often have HOA rules on truck access, weight limits, and gate codes. We confirm the HOA contact and clearances during the walkthrough so the out of the state crew is not blocked at a guard house on move morning.

Eastern Panhandle WV: rural access and grade

Pickups in Martinsburg, Charles Town, Harpers Ferry, and Shepherdstown have their own quirks: steep driveways, gravel turnouts, and bridges with weight restrictions. We scout the access during the walkthrough and bring a smaller shuttle truck if a 53-foot trailer cannot make the turn or grade.

Best time of year for a out of the state move from the DMV

Mid-Atlantic weather and traffic shape every long-haul departure window. Here is what we plan around through the year so heat, humidity, and mountain-pass weather do not bite you in transit.

Spring (March to May)

Best window for most out of the state moves out of the DMV. Mild temperatures protect wood furniture and electronics, weather delays through the Appalachians are rare, and we are not yet stacked into peak season. Book 4-6 weeks out for end-of-month dates.

Summer (June to August)

Peak season and the highest-risk weather window. DMV humidity can damage wood, leather, and electronics in non-climate-controlled trailers, especially on slower shared-truck routes. We add early-morning loading windows to clear the heat and recommend climate-controlled transport for high-end inventory. Book 6-8 weeks out for end-of-month or holiday-week moves.

Fall (September to November)

After Labor Day demand drops and pricing softens. Excellent window for cross-country moves: cooler transit temperatures, dry air, and clean mountain-pass weather west of the Appalachians. Hurricane season can disrupt Southeast destinations through October, so we route around active storms when possible.

Winter (December to February)

Lowest demand and the cheapest dedicated-truck pricing of the year. The trade-off is mountain-pass weather: I-70 west of Hagerstown and I-81 through Virginia into Tennessee can shut down on storm days. We share live weather routing before transit and add 1-2 days to the delivery window for cross-country moves originating between mid-December and late February.

Meet the crew on your out of the state move

Out of the state moves mean trusting a small team with your entire household for a week or more. Here is who shows up.

Igor Stevanovic, co-owner of Blue Crab Moving in Gaithersburg, MD

Igor Stevanovic

Co-Owner

Twelve years walking DMV homes before move day. Igor co-founded Blue Crab Moving in Gaithersburg, MD, and still runs binding-quote walkthroughs himself on out of the state jobs. Native Serbian speaker, fluent English.

Milan Jovanovic, co-owner of Blue Crab Moving

Milan Jovanovic

Co-Owner

Long-haul driver and crew lead on most of our out of the state jobs. Milan co-founded Blue Crab Moving and still loads, drives, and unloads the same shipment from the DMV pickup to your front door, so the same hands that wrap your furniture set it down at the destination.

Long-distance moving FAQ

Do you handle moves out of D.C. high-rise buildings with strict loading-dock windows?

+

Yes. We reserve the freight elevator and loading dock in advance, submit the building's required Certificate of Insurance, and schedule loading inside the assigned window. We have done this for buildings throughout downtown D.C., Arlington, and Bethesda.

How early should I book a out of the state move from the DMV?

+

For peak-season dates (May through September) and end-of-month moves, book 6 to 8 weeks out. For off-season midweek moves, 2 to 3 weeks is usually enough. Booking earlier locks in pricing and gives us flexibility on shared-truck routing.

Can you shuttle from a narrow street in Old Town Alexandria or Capitol Hill?

+

Yes. When a 53-foot trailer cannot reach your front door, we load onto a 26-foot shuttle truck and transfer at a staging lot before the long haul begins. The shuttle fee is included in your binding quote, not added on move day.

Do you provide a Certificate of Insurance for my origin or destination building?

+

Yes. We issue a COI naming the building, management company, and any required additional insureds at no extra charge. Send us the building's COI requirements at booking and we handle it before move day.

What happens if my closing date in the destination city slips after my DMV pickup?

+

That is exactly what storage in transit (SIT) is for. We hold your shipment at our Maryland facility for up to 90 days, then deliver once the new home is ready. There is no second crew or double-handling because the same load goes from our warehouse straight to your destination.

How much does a out of the state move from Maryland cost?

+

Typical 2026 ranges from the DMV: studio or 1-bedroom $2,500-$5,000, 2-bedroom $4,000-$8,500, 3-bedroom $6,500-$13,000, 4-bedroom or larger $10,000-$20,000+. Three factors drive the high end: cross-country distances (Maryland to California adds 35-50% to the base), full packing services for fragile-heavy households ($1,500-$3,500), and dedicated-truck service vs shared consolidation. Three factors push the price down: shared-truck routing (15-30% cheaper than dedicated for typical East Coast destinations), shorter routes like Maryland to North Carolina or New York, and self-packing of non-fragile items. Every quote is binding before move day with no hourly creep and includes federal-required released-value protection. The next step is an in-person or video walkthrough so we can give you an accurate weight-based binding number rather than a placeholder.

What's the difference between dedicated and shared truck?

+

Dedicated truck means your shipment is the only one on board. Faster delivery (often same-day or next-day at the destination), more control over loading sequence and timing, higher cost. Shared (consolidated) truck means we combine your shipment with other out of the state moves heading the same direction. 15-30% cheaper than dedicated, but the delivery window stretches to 3-7 days because of consolidation routing through our regional hubs. Three factors usually point toward dedicated: rigid closing-date timing at the destination, fragile or high-value inventory you don't want loaded with strangers' shipments, and inventories large enough to fill most of a truck on their own. Three factors usually point toward shared: budget-driven moves, flexible delivery windows, and inventories under 5,000 pounds. We quote both options on every out of the state estimate so you can pick what fits your schedule and budget.

Are you licensed for interstate moves?

+

Yes. We hold active USDOT 4539918 and MC 1801440 authority with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. We are not a broker. Your move stays with our crew and our truck from pickup to delivery on dedicated-truck moves.

How long does a out of the state move take?

+

Transit time depends on distance and service tier. East Coast destinations (within 500 miles) typically 1-2 days. Southeast and Mid-Atlantic 2-3 days. Texas, Midwest 4-7 days. West Coast 7-10 days. Shared-truck moves add 1-3 days to the delivery window because of consolidation routing.

Do you offer storage in transit?

+

Yes. We offer storage in transit (SIT) at our Maryland facility for up to 90 days. Your shipment is loaded once at origin and delivered once at destination — no double-handling or second crew at the back end. Pricing runs $0.50-$1.00 per cubic foot per month depending on inventory and storage duration.

What's covered if something is damaged in transit?

+

Federal regulation requires us to offer two valuation options. Released-value protection ($0.60 per pound per item) is included at no charge but pays out very little on damaged items. Full-value protection (priced based on declared value) covers replacement or repair. Damage claims are rare on out of the state moves but they happen; we recommend full-value coverage on most household shipments.

Can you handle pianos, art, gun safes, or other specialty items?

+

Yes. We crate fine art and antique mirrors. We move uprights and grands with a piano dolly and four-person team. Gun safes get strapped, dollied, and secured separately. Specialty items are quoted on top of the base move price, and we walk through every item at the in-person walkthrough so nothing is missed.

Do I need a permit at my destination?

+

Maybe, depending on the destination city. Some cities require a moving truck street permit similar to Baltimore's BCDOT permit or D.C.'s DDOT permit. We coordinate with our destination delivery crew or the receiving building (for high-rise condos) to file or confirm any required permits before delivery.
