What's different about furniture delivery

One piece is harder than it looks

Big-box stores and freight services drop the box at the curb. We carry the sofa up three flights, around the 90-degree turn, and place it against the wall you wanted it on. Then we take the packaging away. That's the difference.

Showroom, auction, and facility pickups

We pick up from furniture showrooms (Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, West Elm, RH Outlet), estate auctions, storage units, friends' garages, and warehouses. We coordinate the dock window or appointment, load it properly, and deliver it the same day or scheduled day.

Disassembly and reassembly

Bed frames, dining tables with leaves, sectional sofas, modular shelving, armoires that don't fit through the door — all get taken apart at the joinery, blanket-wrapped, and reassembled on the other end. Hardware is bagged and labeled.

Antiques, art, and high-value pieces

We crate fine art and antique mirrors. Antique furniture rides blanket-wrapped, never on its side. Marble tabletops and glass shelves are double-padded and strapped vertical. We've moved enough estate-auction Hepplewhite to know what it needs.

How a furniture delivery with us actually goes

  1. Step 1

    Quick Quote

Tell us what is being delivered, where it is coming from in the DMV (showroom, auction house, friend's garage, IKEA dock), where it is going, and any access constraints (stairs, narrow doors, walk-up, freight elevator). We give you the binding price over the phone, usually within 30 minutes.

  2. Step 2

    Pickup Coordination

For showrooms (Restoration Hardware Friendship Heights, Pottery Barn Tysons, Crate & Barrel Tysons, West Elm Bethesda Row, RH Outlet, IKEA College Park, IKEA Woodbridge) we coordinate the dock window directly with the seller. For estate-auction pickups (Sloans & Kenyon, Quinn's Auction Galleries, Weschler's), we book the pickup appointment. For private pickups, we confirm the time with you and the other party.

  3. Step 3

    Pickup and Transport

Blanket-wrapped at pickup, strapped properly in the truck so nothing shifts on Beltway or I-270 traffic. Most DMV local deliveries happen same-day or within 2-3 days. Multi-store DMV consolidation runs (one truck picking up at three or four showrooms in a day) is a service we offer for designers and home stagers.

  4. Step 4

    White-Glove Delivery

Carried in (no curbside drops). Disassembly or reassembly as needed. Placed where you want it. Packaging removed and recycled or disposed of, including IKEA cardboard. Floors and walls protected throughout with runners and corner guards in lobbies, corridors, and stairwells.

What does furniture delivery cost?

Furniture delivery is priced by item count, distance, and access. Local delivery within the DMV is most common. Regional pickups (Philadelphia, Richmond, etc.) quoted with mileage layered on.

Starting at

$480

*

Local moves: 2-mover crew with truck, 3-hour minimum on the clock.

* Eligibility and conditions

  • Off-season rate. May 1 to September 30 and end-of-month dates run higher.
  • Available Monday through Thursday. Weekend and Friday rates run higher.
  • Excludes the last week of every month and federal holidays.
  • Subject to crew and truck availability on the date you request.
  • Travel time, packing materials, stairs, long carries, and specialty items are billed separately.
  • Final binding price is set after a free walkthrough and supersedes any starting-at quote.

Single-item local delivery

$150 – $400

Sofa, dining table, dresser, bed frame, etc. Within the DMV. Includes white-glove placement and packaging removal.

Multi-item delivery (3-6 items)

$300 – $750

Bedroom set, dining set, or partial-room delivery. Same-day local. Includes disassembly and reassembly.

Showroom or full-room delivery

$500 – $1,500

Full Restoration Hardware living room or Crate & Barrel dining set. Coordinated showroom pickup, full white-glove delivery and assembly.

Regional or specialty pickup

$600 – $2,500

Estate auction in Philadelphia, gallery purchase in Richmond, or specialty piece (grand piano, antique armoire, fine art). Quoted by distance and item.

What affects your final price

  • Walk-up flights add $50-$100 per flight above the second floor.
  • Disassembly and reassembly is included on local deliveries; complex items (modular sectionals, multi-piece dining tables) may add $50-$150.
  • Same-day delivery available for items already in our service area; runs 15-25% over scheduled rates.
  • Out of the state delivery uses our out of the state pricing model when distance exceeds 200 miles.
  • Specialty handling (custom crating for fine art, climate-controlled transport for antiques) quoted separately.

DMV showroom and pickup-source rules

DMV showrooms, auction houses, and IKEA each have their own dock procedures and hold-time rules. Here is what we coordinate before the pickup so we are not turned away or charged a hold fee.

DMV showrooms with appointment-based docks (RH, Pottery Barn, West Elm)

Restoration Hardware Friendship Heights, Pottery Barn Tysons, West Elm Bethesda Row, and Crate & Barrel Tysons all use appointment-based dock pickups. We book the dock window directly with the showroom's customer-service team using your invoice number, arrive in the assigned 30-minute slot, and present a delivery authorization signed by you. No back-and-forth phone calls between you and the showroom.

IKEA College Park and Woodbridge dock procedures

IKEA pickups use the customer-service desk to release flat-pack inventory. We bring your order number, present ID matching the order, and pull from the will-call lane. IKEA has a 24-72 hour hold window depending on store and order type; we book the pickup inside the hold so you do not lose the inventory.

Mid-Atlantic estate auctions and gallery pickups

Sloans & Kenyon (Chevy Chase), Quinn's Auction Galleries (Falls Church), Weschler's (Capitol Heights), Hindman (Philadelphia), and other Mid-Atlantic auction houses each have their own pickup-and-payment rules. We coordinate with the auction's shipping department after you settle the invoice, blanket-wrap at pickup, and stage in the truck so high-value lots ride padded and strapped.

DMV high-rise destination delivery: COIs and freight elevators

Most Bethesda, Arlington, Crystal City, and Tysons high-rises require a moving-crew Certificate of Insurance even for single-piece deliveries, plus a reserved freight elevator window. We send the COI before delivery day and book the elevator slot. The lobby is not the place to discover the building's rules.

DMV rowhouse delivery: stairs, narrow doorways, 90-degree turns

Federal Hill, Capitol Hill, Logan Circle, Fells Point, and Mount Vernon rowhouses have stair turns that bend 90 degrees mid-flight and doorways narrower than modern apartments. We measure pieces against the access at the quote stage so we know in advance whether the sofa will make the turn or if a window hoist is needed.

IKEA cardboard, packaging removal, and donation pickup

We remove all packaging, including IKEA cardboard, and recycle or dispose of it. Many customers pair a delivery with a donation pickup of the old item; we coordinate Goodwill, Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore, or A Wider Circle drop-offs as part of the same trip.

Best time of year for furniture delivery in the DMV

Furniture delivery demand tracks the moving cycle plus retail-sale calendars. Here is how the year shapes our delivery calendar.

Spring (March to May)

Spring move-in season drives strong demand for showroom delivery. Weekend slots at RH, Pottery Barn, and West Elm fill fast. Mild weather is ideal for blanket-wrapped pieces and outdoor staging at estate-auction pickups.

Summer (June to August)

Peak demand. The August 31 / September 1 weekend is the busiest 48 hours of the year for DMV moves and showroom deliveries cluster on the same dates. We add early-morning starts to clear humidity. Wood furniture, leather sofas, and electronics in non-climate-controlled trucks need humidity protection on long-haul runs.

Fall (September to November)

Second peak. Pre-holiday delivery windows tighten in late October and November as customers want pieces in place before Thanksgiving. Cool dry weather and shorter waits at most showrooms. Black Friday week drives a surge of IKEA and big-box pickups; book 48-72 hours ahead.

Winter (December to February)

Lowest demand and the most flexible delivery scheduling. Trade-off is icy DMV walkways and stairs at delivery; we salt and pace the carry slower in temperatures below 25F. Holiday-week showroom dock windows are limited; we book around store hours.

Meet the crew on your out of the state move

Out of the state moves mean trusting a small team with your entire household for a week or more. Here is who shows up.

Igor Stevanovic, co-owner of Blue Crab Moving in Gaithersburg, MD

Igor Stevanovic

Co-Owner

Twelve years walking DMV homes before move day. Igor co-founded Blue Crab Moving in Gaithersburg, MD, and still runs binding-quote walkthroughs himself on out of the state jobs. Native Serbian speaker, fluent English.

Milan Jovanovic, co-owner of Blue Crab Moving

Milan Jovanovic

Co-Owner

Long-haul driver and crew lead on most of our out of the state jobs. Milan co-founded Blue Crab Moving and still loads, drives, and unloads the same shipment from the DMV pickup to your front door, so the same hands that wrap your furniture set it down at the destination.

Furniture delivery FAQ

Do you deliver from DMV showrooms like Restoration Hardware Friendship Heights or Pottery Barn Tysons?

+

Yes. We pick up from Restoration Hardware Friendship Heights, Pottery Barn Tysons, Crate & Barrel Tysons, West Elm Bethesda Row, RH Outlet, IKEA College Park and Woodbridge, Ethan Allen, Arhaus, and most other DMV-area showrooms. We book the dock window directly with the showroom's customer-service team using your invoice number, arrive in the assigned slot with your delivery authorization, and deliver to your home with white-glove placement and assembly.

Can you pick up from Sloans & Kenyon, Quinn's, or other Mid-Atlantic estate auctions?

+

Yes, regularly. We coordinate with Sloans & Kenyon (Chevy Chase), Quinn's Auction Galleries (Falls Church), Weschler's (Capitol Heights), Hindman (Philadelphia), and other Mid-Atlantic auction houses after you settle the invoice. We blanket-wrap at pickup, stage high-value lots padded and strapped, and deliver to your DMV home or vacation home.

Will you send a Certificate of Insurance to my Bethesda or Arlington high-rise for a single-piece delivery?

+

Yes. Most DMV high-rises in Bethesda, Arlington, Crystal City, and Tysons require a moving-crew COI even for single-piece deliveries, plus a reserved freight elevator window. We send the COI naming the building before delivery day and book the elevator slot at no extra charge.

Can you do an IKEA College Park pickup and assemble at my home?

+

Yes for the pickup; partial yes for assembly. We pick up your IKEA order from College Park or Woodbridge using your order number, transport in our truck, and deliver to your home. We do not do full flat-pack IKEA assembly from scratch as a stand-alone service. We do reassemble pieces we transported and assemble simple flat-packs as a paid add-on; ask during the quote.

Can you do a multi-store DMV consolidation run for a designer or stager?

+

Yes, regularly for interior designers and home stagers. One truck and one crew picking up at three or four DMV showrooms in a single day, then delivering to one or more staging properties. We schedule the dock windows back-to-back and route the truck to clear Beltway and I-270 traffic windows.

Can you pick up from a showroom or store?

+

Yes. We pick up from Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, West Elm, RH Outlet, Ethan Allen, Arhaus, and most other DMV-area showrooms. We coordinate the pickup window with the showroom and deliver to your home with white-glove placement and assembly.

Do you do estate auction pickups?

+

Yes, regularly. Most of our regional pickups are estate auctions in Philadelphia, Richmond, and the broader Mid-Atlantic. We coordinate the pickup time with the auction house, blanket-wrap everything at pickup, and deliver to your home.

Can you assemble what you deliver?

+

Yes. Bed frames, dining tables, sectional sofas, modular shelving, armoires that come apart for transport — all assembled on delivery. Hardware bagged and labeled. We don't do flat-pack IKEA assembly from scratch as a stand-alone service, but we will reassemble pieces we transported.

Will you deliver something I bought from a friend?

+

Yes. Private-party pickups are common: Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, NextDoor, friends and family across the DMV. We coordinate the pickup time with the seller and deliver to your home. Cash payment to the seller is your responsibility; we just handle the move.

Can you take my old furniture away when you deliver new?

+

Yes. Many customers pair a delivery with a removal of the old item. We coordinate the donation drop-off (Goodwill, Salvation Army, Habitat ReStore) or junk-disposal pickup as part of the same trip. Adds $100-$250 typically.

Do you deliver same-day?

+

Often yes for items already in our service area. Showroom pickups and inter-state deliveries usually need 24-48 hours of lead time. Call us before noon and ask.

How do you protect my floors and walls during delivery?

+

Floor runners on hardwood and tile. Wall protectors at corners and stairwells. Door jambs padded. Furniture blanket-wrapped before it leaves the truck. We've moved into enough new construction and freshly-painted homes to know how to deliver without damage.

Will you handle my piano delivery?

+

Yes. Pianos use our specialty piano-mover crew with a piano dolly, ramps, and a four-person team. Pricing is separate from standard furniture delivery — see our piano-movers page or call for a quote.
