What's different about moving in Maryland?

The permit, regulatory, and access patterns our dispatchers plan around for every Maryland booking.

  • Montgomery County uses Residential Permit Parking (RPP) zones around Metro stations and core commercial districts. Our crews check the block before move day.
  • City of Frederick issues paid 'No Parking' sign permits for downtown rowhouse moves through its Parking Department.
  • Howard County moves into and out of Columbia coordinate with the Columbia Association village offices for shared parking and pathway access.
  • Baltimore City requires a right-of-way permit from BCDOT for any rowhouse move blocking street parking. Standard processing is 15 days.
  • Annapolis requires a Temporary Reserved Parking permit from the City Permits Office for moves in the Historic District and tight downtown blocks.
  • I-270 widening construction adds 30-45 minutes during peak hours through Montgomery and Frederick counties. We schedule loads early when possible.

Common Maryland move corridors

Where most of our Maryland moves originate or terminate.

I-270 biotech corridor

Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Bethesda are on the spine of the state's life-sciences cluster. Most weekday moves here either start or end on the I-270 corridor.

Red Line Metro corridor

Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Rockville share the Red Line. High-rise condo moves in these cities cluster around Metro stations.

I-95 / Howard County

Columbia and the Howard County employment cluster sit between DC and Baltimore. Inbound moves often come from both directions.

US-50 / Annapolis spur

Annapolis moves tie back to the wider DMV via US-50. Bay Bridge weekend traffic affects timing in summer.

I-70 / Frederick

Frederick anchors the western edge of our service area. Inbound DC families and commuters drive most of the moves here.

Maryland moving FAQ

Straight answers to the questions we hear most from Maryland customers.

Which Maryland cities do you serve?

+

We move clients in eight primary Maryland cities: Gaithersburg (our HQ), Rockville, Bethesda, Silver Spring, Frederick, Columbia, Annapolis, and Baltimore. Beyond those eight, we cover all of Montgomery County, Howard County, Anne Arundel County, Frederick County, Baltimore City and County, and Prince George's County for local moves. Common suburban towns we serve regularly include Towson, Catonsville, Pikesville, Lutherville, Glen Burnie, Ellicott City, Mount Airy, Damascus, Olney, Wheaton, Kensington, and Chevy Chase. If your origin or destination sits inside the I-495 Beltway or anywhere along the I-270 corridor, we cover it without travel-time surcharges.

Do I need a permit to move in Maryland?

+

It depends on the city. Most suburban Maryland blocks need no city permit because driveway parking is available. Baltimore City requires a BCDOT right-of-way permit (15-day standard processing) for rowhouse moves blocking street parking, with a $130-$170 fee built into your binding quote. Frederick issues paid 'No Parking' sign permits for downtown rowhouse moves through its Parking Department. Annapolis requires a Temporary Reserved Parking permit from the City Permits Office, especially in the Historic District. Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Rockville use Residential Permit Parking (RPP) zones around Metro stations and core commercial blocks; our crews check the block before move day. We file every required permit on your behalf, no chase work for you.

How does Maryland HOA handling work?

+

Many Maryland master-planned communities require advance HOA notification and a guest pass for the moving truck. We file paperwork with the HOA office five days ahead so the truck doesn't get held up at the gate. The communities that require this most often: Kentlands and Lakelands in Gaithersburg, King Farm and Fallsgrove in Rockville, Montgomery Village's various neighborhoods, Worman's Mill and the historic core in Frederick, the ten Columbia villages (Wilde Lake, Harper's Choice, Long Reach, etc.), and Crofton and Belvoir Square in Anne Arundel County. Some HOAs also restrict move hours to weekday business windows; we coordinate with the HOA contact during the booking call so you don't field calls on move day.

When's the best time to move in Maryland?

+

Spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) bring the most comfortable Maryland weather and are typically when families plan moves around school schedules. Summer is the busiest season — book 30-45 days ahead for end-of-month dates, especially around the August 31 / September 1 lease-turnover weekend in Baltimore and Bethesda apartment markets. Winters are mild outside of nor'easters, but Frederick County and the Eastern Panhandle get meaningfully more snow than closer-in DC suburbs because of elevation. We salt and shovel walkways before a single piece moves on icy days, and we add 30-60 minutes of buffer on cross-county routes when a storm is in the 24-hour forecast.

How much does a Maryland move typically cost?

+

Local single-family moves in Maryland usually run $1,000 to $5,000 depending on size, stairs, and access. Studio and 1-bedroom apartments run $400 to $1,200 off-peak. Downtown rowhouse moves in Baltimore, Frederick, or Annapolis run higher because of permits, smaller trucks (16-22 ft instead of 26 ft), and pre-1900 stairs that need disassembly. Bethesda, Silver Spring, and Arlington high-rises add COI paperwork and reserved-elevator windows. Three factors drive the high end: full packing service ($500-$2,000 depending on inventory), walk-up flights above the second floor ($100-$200 per flight per crew member), and long-carry distances when the truck cannot park within 100 feet of the door. Out of the state moves out of or into Maryland are quoted by inventory and distance. Every quote is binding before move day.

Do you handle out of the state moves out of Maryland?

+

Yes. We move clients out of Maryland to anywhere in the United States. Common destinations include Florida (a large share of our out of the state retirees), the Carolinas (Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte for tech and military relocations), Texas (Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth for remote workers), Georgia (Atlanta corporate moves), New York and Boston (Northeast corridor career moves), and California (West Coast tech). We hold active USDOT 4539918 and MC 1801440 authority with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, verifiable on the FMCSA SAFER lookup. Out of the state pricing is binding before move day, never an hourly creep at the destination, and we use the same crew at pickup and delivery on dedicated-truck moves.
