Piano Movers across MD, D.C., VA & WV
Spinets, consoles, full uprights, baby grands, and concert grands moved across the DMV. Specialty crews with piano dollies, proper rigging, and the four-person teams pianos require. We have moved Steinways, Yamahas, Baldwins, and the occasional 19th-century Bösendorfer through DMV rowhouse staircases, Bethesda condo elevators, and Old Town Alexandria cobblestone streets without damage.

What's different about piano moves
Pianos are unforgiving
A piano that drops or tips doesn't just dent — the soundboard cracks, the action moves, the bridge fails. We don't move pianos with a regular crew and a furniture dolly. Specialty piano movers, piano dolly, four-person team, proper ramps, every time.
Stairs require a plan
Most uprights make it through standard staircases with a four-person team and the right ramps. Baby grands often don't — the staircase is too narrow for the case, or the turn at the landing is too tight. When that's the case we hoist the piano through a second-floor window with a tilt cart and rigging. We've done it many times.
Doorways and turning radius
We measure the doorway, the hallway, and every turn before move day. If the case won't make a turn, we plan the alternate route — through a back door, off the porch, or out a window. No surprises on move day.
Climate sensitivity
Pianos hate temperature and humidity swings. We blanket-wrap the case, transport it upright, and avoid leaving it in the truck overnight when possible. For out of the state moves, climate-controlled transport is available at additional cost.
How a piano move with us actually goes
- Step 1
Quote with Piano Type
Tell us what kind of piano (spinet, console, upright, studio, baby grand, full grand, concert grand), the dimensions, and the DMV access at both ends (rowhouse stairs, condo freight elevator, Old Town historic-district sidewalk, suburban driveway). We give the binding price over the phone or after a video walkthrough, usually within 30 minutes.
- Step 2
Site Walkthrough for Grands and Tight DMV Access
For baby grands, concert grands, and pianos with tight DMV access (narrow Federal Hill stair turns, small Bethesda condo elevators, Capitol Hill rowhouse second-floor windows, Old Town Alexandria cobblestones), we do an in-person walkthrough before move day. We measure the case against the access, plan the route, and confirm the gear we will need: piano dolly, ramps, tilt cart, four-strap rig, or window hoist.
- Step 3
Four-Person Specialty Crew on Move Day
Four-person specialty piano crew with piano dolly, ramps, blankets, straps, tilt cart, and rigging gear. Floor protectors and wall protectors go up first across lobbies, corridors, and stairwells. Piano comes apart only as much as the manufacturer recommends (typically legs and pedal lyre off for grands). We coordinate freight-elevator windows at high-rises and pull street permits in Baltimore (BCDOT) or D.C. (DDOT) when the truck needs curb space.
- Step 4
Reassembly and Placement
Piano placed on the new floor exactly where you want it. Reassembled, leveled, and walked. We do not tune (your tuner does that 2-4 weeks after the move once the piano has settled in its new climate), but we leave it ready for the tuner and we recommend DMV piano technicians if you do not already have one.
What does piano moving cost?
Piano pricing is by piano type, distance, and access. Local pianos (within the DMV) start at the lower end. Long-distance and tight-access moves go higher. Every quote is binding before move day.
Starting at
$760
*Piano moving: 4-mover crew, baby grand or concert grand. Uprights are quoted separately and usually run lower.
* Eligibility and conditions
- •Applies to baby grand and concert grand pianos with the 4-mover crew on a single-floor pickup and single-floor delivery within the DMV.
- •Stairs, narrow stairwells, removed legs and lyre, climate-controlled transport, and crating are billed on top of the starting price.
- •Long-distance piano moves are quoted on the long-distance pricing model.
- •Subject to crew and equipment (piano dollies, ramps, four-strap rigs) availability on the date you request.
- •Final binding price is set after an in-person or video walkthrough and supersedes any starting-at quote.
Spinet / Console upright (in-home)
$250 – $500
Smaller upright pianos, single-floor move within the same home or short local move. Two- or three-person crew.
Studio / Full upright (local)
$400 – $850
Standard upright (50-60 inches). Local DMV move with stairs or moderate access challenges. Three- or four-person crew.
Baby grand (local)
$550 – $1,200
Baby grand pianos (5-6 ft). Four-person crew, requires legs and pedals off, and often tight-access planning. Local DMV move.
Full / Concert grand (local)
$900 – $2,000
Full grand or concert grand (6.5-9 ft). Four-person specialty crew, full rigging, often requires window hoist or alternate route. Local DMV move.
Long-distance piano move
$1,500 – $5,500+
Out of state or cross-country. Climate-controlled transport available at additional cost. Quoted by piano type and distance.
What affects your final price
- Stairs add $50-$200 per flight depending on piano type and tight turns.
- Window hoist or specialty rigging adds $200-$500 when stairs won't accommodate the piano.
- Climate-controlled out of the state transport adds 25-40% to the standard out of the state rate.
- We don't tune pianos — your local piano tuner does that 2-4 weeks after the move, after the piano has settled.
- Specialty antiques and very old pianos (pre-1900) may require custom crating quoted separately.
DMV piano-move access rules and origin permits
Pianos do not forgive bad access planning. Here is what we coordinate at every DMV pickup so the soundboard, case, and your floors all arrive intact.
Bethesda, Rockville, Silver Spring high-rises and condos
DMV high-rises require a Certificate of Insurance naming the building and management, plus a reserved freight elevator window. Most freight elevators accommodate uprights and baby grands; full and concert grands sometimes require the legs and lyre off plus a tilt-cart approach. We confirm elevator dimensions during the walkthrough and book the slot before move day.
Washington, D.C. rowhouses and condos: DDOT permits and stair turns
Capitol Hill, Logan Circle, Dupont, Shaw, and Petworth rowhouses have stair turns that bend 90 degrees mid-flight. Most uprights make it with a four-person team and proper ramps; baby grands and concert grands often need a window hoist. We pull a DDOT public space permit so the truck can hold curb space at the front door.
Baltimore rowhouse pianos and BCDOT permits
Federal Hill, Fells Point, Mount Vernon, and Hampden rowhouses have similar stair turn challenges to D.C. We pull a Baltimore BCDOT moving-truck permit so the truck holds curb space, and we plan the route through the front door, side gate, or window depending on what the case will clear.
Old Town Alexandria cobblestones and historic-district access
Old Town Alexandria's cobblestone streets and tight historic-district sidewalks require careful piano dolly handling. We bring extra padding for the piano legs and route the dolly path on the smoothest stretches. Old Town parking permits and historic-district size restrictions affect where we can stage the truck; we coordinate before move day.
Site walkthrough for every grand and tight-access upright
Before we lock the binding price on a baby grand, full grand, or concert grand, we do an in-person walkthrough at both ends. We measure the case width against doorways, the staircase landing turn radius, the freight elevator dimensions, and the truck access at the curb. The walkthrough confirms whether the move uses standard rigging or window-hoist rigging.
Window-hoist rigging for second-floor grand placements
When the staircase will not accommodate a baby grand or concert grand, we hoist the piano through a second-floor window using a tilt cart, four-strap rig, and four-person team. This is standard equipment, not a one-off. We have window-hoisted pianos into Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Capitol Hill, Logan Circle, and Old Town Alexandria homes many times.
Best time of year to move a piano in the DMV
Pianos are sensitive to temperature and humidity. Here is how DMV weather shapes our piano-move calendar so the case and soundboard travel in their best condition.
Spring (March to May)
Best window of the year for piano moves. Mild temperatures (55-75F) and moderate humidity protect the case and the strings. Spring rain is rare enough that outdoor staging in DMV rowhouse front yards is reliable. Book 2-3 weeks ahead for end-of-month dates.
Summer (June to August)
Highest humidity of the year and the toughest season for piano moves. Mid-Atlantic humidity above 70% can affect the soundboard and the action. We move at early-morning starts to clear the heat, blanket-wrap the case extra-thick, and keep the piano out of non-climate-controlled trucks for as little time as possible. For out of the state summer moves, we recommend climate-controlled transport.
Fall (September to November)
Second-best window after spring. Cool, dry weather is excellent for piano moves and demand is lower than spring. Pre-holiday placement of new piano purchases (Steinway gallery deliveries, Yamaha showroom sales) drives steady demand through November.
Winter (December to February)
Lowest demand and most flexible scheduling. Cold dry air is fine for the case but icy DMV walkways are dangerous on a piano carry. We salt the path of travel before a single piece moves and pace slower in temperatures below 25F. We pre-warm the receiving room when possible so the piano does not hit a 30-degree temperature differential walking through the door.
Meet the crew on your out of the state move
Out of the state moves mean trusting a small team with your entire household for a week or more. Here is who shows up.

Igor Stevanovic
Co-Owner
Twelve years walking DMV homes before move day. Igor co-founded Blue Crab Moving in Gaithersburg, MD, and still runs binding-quote walkthroughs himself on out of the state jobs. Native Serbian speaker, fluent English.

Milan Jovanovic
Co-Owner
Long-haul driver and crew lead on most of our out of the state jobs. Milan co-founded Blue Crab Moving and still loads, drives, and unloads the same shipment from the DMV pickup to your front door, so the same hands that wrap your furniture set it down at the destination.

Piano moving FAQ
How much does it cost to move a piano in the DMV?
+
Baby grand and concert grand starting price is $760 with a four-mover crew on a single-floor pickup and single-floor delivery within the DMV. Uprights are quoted separately and usually run lower. Full DMV piano-move ranges by type: spinet or console upright $250-$500 (smaller, simpler in-home moves); full upright $400-$850 (most common, three-person crew); baby grand $760-$1,200 (four-mover crew, legs and pedals off, often tight-access planning); full or concert grand $900-$2,000 (full specialty rigging, often needs window hoist for second-floor placements). Stairs add $50-$200 per flight depending on piano size and turn radius. Long-distance moves run $1,500-$5,500+ and use a dedicated piano dolly inside the truck, with optional climate-controlled transport for cross-country routes. We do not tune pianos ourselves; your DMV technician handles that 2-4 weeks after the move once the instrument has settled in its new climate.
Can you hoist my baby grand through a second-floor window in the DMV?
+
Yes. Window hoists are standard kit on baby grand and concert grand moves when the staircase will not accommodate the case. We use a tilt cart, four-strap rig, and four-person team. We have window-hoisted pianos into Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Capitol Hill, Logan Circle, and Old Town Alexandria homes many times. The window-hoist fee adds $200-$500 to the base move and is locked in the binding quote, not a surprise on move day.
Do you handle DMV showroom and gallery piano deliveries?
+
Yes. We coordinate with Steinway Hall (D.C.), Jordan Kitt's Music (Rockville and Fairfax), Steinway Piano Gallery, Marlow Piano, and other DMV showrooms and galleries. We pick up directly from the showroom dock or gallery, blanket-wrap, and deliver to the customer's home with full white-glove placement. Same applies to pre-owned-instrument sales and tuner-recommended in-home relocations.
Will you pull a street permit so your truck can park at my D.C. or Baltimore rowhouse?
+
Yes. We pull Baltimore BCDOT and Washington D.C. DDOT moving-truck permits and post the no-park signs 48 hours ahead. The permit fee is built into the binding quote, not a surprise add-on. Without a permit on a tight rowhouse block, the truck competes for street parking and you pay us to walk an extra hundred feet on a piano dolly.
Should I move my piano in summer or winter in the DMV?
+
Spring or fall is best. DMV summer humidity above 70% can affect the soundboard and the action; we mitigate with early-morning starts, extra blanket wrap, and minimal time in non-climate-controlled trucks. Winter cold and ice are tough on the carry but easier on the piano itself; we salt walkways and pace the carry slower below 25F. For out of the state summer moves, we recommend climate-controlled transport at 25-40% above standard rate to protect the case and strings.
Do I need a specialty piano mover or can a regular mover do it?
+
Use a specialty piano mover. Regular movers are not trained on piano dollies, four-point lift technique, or rigging for a piece that can crack a soundboard if it tips. We've repaired enough customer pianos that other movers damaged. Pay the difference once, not many times.
Will my piano need to be tuned after the move?
+
Yes, almost always. Even a careful piano move stresses the soundboard and the strings. Wait 2-4 weeks after the move for the piano to settle in its new climate, then call your tuner. We don't tune pianos ourselves; your local piano technician does that.
Can you move my piano up to the second floor?
+
Most uprights, yes, with a four-person crew and proper ramps. Baby grands usually need a window hoist on the second floor because the staircase is too narrow or the turn too tight. We do site walkthroughs for grand pianos before quoting so you know which approach we're using.
What if my piano won't fit through the door?
+
We measure first, never on move day. If the case is wider than the door, we typically remove the door from the hinges (with permission) or plan an alternate route. For grand pianos that won't fit any interior route, the window hoist is standard.
How long does it take to move a piano?
+
Most local upright moves take 1-2 hours total (load, transport, unload). Baby grand moves take 2-3 hours. Full grands with tight access take 3-4 hours, longer if a window hoist is involved. Long-distance moves obviously take longer in transit.
Do you move pianos for piano dealers and showrooms?
+
Yes. We coordinate with showroom delivery teams or pick up from the showroom directly and deliver to the customer. Same applies to piano stores selling pre-owned instruments and for tuner-recommended relocations within a customer's home.
Can you move a piano in a out of the state move?
+
Yes. The piano is loaded on a dedicated piano dolly inside the out of the state truck, blanket-wrapped, and strapped against shifting. For climate-sensitive moves (cross-country, very humid or very cold destinations), climate-controlled transport is available at 25-40% above standard rate.
